Welcome to the 16th episode of the main podcast. This episode looks at Spotlight, Deadpool, The Martian and The General. We had been due to look at The Boy but this is not released until March now.
Spotlight follows the investigative reporting team at the Boston Globe as they dig into the child abuse scandal at the hands of the Catholic clergy. The film is directed by Tom McCarthy and stars the likes of Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Leiv Schreiber and Stanley Tucci.
Deadpool is another Marvel superhero hitting our screens, albeit brought to life by 20th Century Fox rather than Marvel’s own studios. Ryan Reynolds plays a character who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and is approached by a shady character from a secret organisation with the offer of a cure with the side-benefit of superhero powers. Needless to say it doesn’t go smoothly and Reynolds’ character becomes the titular Deadpool and the film follows his search for the person that carried out the procedures with the hope of correcting some of the side-effects.
Ridley Scott’s The Martian is the home release for this episode and stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels and Sean Bean amongst others. The film follows Damon’s character who is left for dead on Mars by his crewmates and is a story of his quest for survival and NASA’s search for a rescue plan back home.
The 1998 movie The General is the classic movie for this episode. The film stars Brendan Gleeson as Martin Cahill, a violent criminal from Dublin and follows his early life through to his eventual murder.
The next episode looks at The Boy (finally!), Black Mass and The Italian Job (the original version). Before that, however, there will be an actor special looking at Clint Eastwood.
