Welcome to the 17th episode of the main podcast. This episode looks at The Witch, The Boy, Black Mass and The Italian Job.
The Witch follows the woes of a puritanical family in New England in 1630. Outcast from their community for being too puritanical, the family move into the wilderness and start to farm alongside some woods. Life is hard and crops fail and then the newborn youngest child vanishes under mysterious circumstances. The family slowly falls apart from this point forwards. The film is directed and written by Robert Egger and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie.
Next up is The Boy which sees a woman moves from the US to become nanny to a peculiar English couple’s son, which actually turns out to be a life-size doll. The ‘parents’ are to go on holiday and they leave a strict set of rules for the nanny to follow, which she fails to do and various events start to happen. Directed by William Brent Bell and written by Stacey Menear, the film stars Lauren Cohen, Rupert Evans and James Russell amongst others
The film Black Mass gives the true story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, a violent criminal from South Boston who was also a long-time informant for the FBI in order to aid him taking control of his home area. The film also follows his relationship with his politician brother and best friend who was a FBI agent. The film is directed by Scott Cooper, was written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, and stars Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Egerton, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon and Peter Sarsgaard amongst others.
The Italian Job follows a ladies-man ex-con as he plans to steal a load of gold in Turin from under the watchful eyes of the police and the mafia, using cunning and some Mini Coopers. The film was released in 1969 and was directed by Peter Collinson, written by Troy Kennedy-Martin and has a cast that includes Michael Caine, Noel Coward, Benny Hill, Irene Handl, John Le Measurier amongst others.
There is talk of a Batman special in the next week to be followed mid-April by a Foundation Film special looking at Raiders of the Lost Ark, which will be recorded when Robert, Marc and Paul trek across the country to see Michael in Cardiff. The films to be looked at in the next main podcast are still under discussion and will be finalised/announced in due course.
