BTTF029 – Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, The Graduate

Hello and welcome to the 29th edition of the main podcast. In this episode we take a look at the cinema release of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 and the classic Film The Graduate.

First up is the latest Marvel cinema release, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. Directed by James Gunn, who also had a writing credit, the film stars the main cast from the first film, namely Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan and the voices of Bradley Cooper (Rocket) and Vin Diesel (Groot). There were some additional star power provided by Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stalone. The film has the backing of Awesome Mix 2 throughout and concentrates on Peter Quill’s parentage.

This episode’s classic film is The Graduate. Released in 1968, the film was directed by Mike Nichols, written by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry, and features a soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel. The film starred Dustin Hoffman as the titular graduate, Ann Bancroft, Katherine Ross, William Daniels and Murray Hamilton. The film follows a recent graduate, Ben, who returns to the family home where he is soon seduced by the wife of his father’s business partner and family friend. Things become complicated when Ben is encouraged to ask out the daughter of said mistress and family friend.

BTTF#028 – Life, The Godfather

Hello and welcome to the 28th episode of the podcast. In this episode we take a look at the recent release of the sci-fi film Life and the classic film is The Godfather.

First up is the science fiction film, Life. The film follows a group of astronauts on the International Space Station who retrieve a space probe carrying soil samples from Mars. Within the sample they find the first evidence of extraterrestrial life. They manage to reanimate this lifeform and the film follows the events that follow. Life is directed by Daniel Espinosa and was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film stars Jake Gyllenhall, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Ariyon Bakare, Olga Dihovichnaya and Hiroyuki Sanada.

This episode’s classic film is The Godfather, which is highly acclaimed and regarded by many as one of the best films ever. The film follows the Corleone mafia family in a cycle of crime and violence as Don Vito’s reign ends and his youngest son, Michael, takes over. The film is based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name and he wrote the screenplay along with Francis Ford Coppola, who also directed the film. The film stars Marlon Brando as the titular Godfather, Don Vito Corleone, and Al Pacino stars as his youngest son, Michael. Other stars include James Caan, Robert Duval, Richard S Castellano, Talia Shire et al. The film was released in 1972, making this its 45th anniversary year.

ACT#007 – Denzel Washington

Welcome to our latest podcast that has a slightly revised format, we hope you like it. This is our latest actor special and this time we take a look at the work of Denzel Washington.

Born 28th December 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York, Denzel has 56 acting credits to his name on IMDB and these have garnished numerous awards and nominations. Included in these nominations are seven academy award nominations and Denzel won Best Supporting Actor in 1989 for Glory and the Best Actor award for Training Day in 2001.

The main film under discussion is his most recent film, the critically acclaimed Fences, but a whole raft of his other films crop up in the discussion.

ACT#006 – Gary Oldman

In today’s podcast special we take a look at the British Actor, Gary Oldman. Born 21st March 1958 in London, Gary Oldman has 89 acting credits to his name on IMDB, taking in film, TV and video games. These productions, in turn, have provided him with 47 award nominations so far, winning 26.

BTTF#027 – La La Land, The Exorcist

Hello and welcome to the 27th episode of the main podcast. Please accept our apologies for the delay in publishing it, we’ll try to be better!

In this episode we take a look at the cinema release of La La Land and the classic film is The Exorcist.

First up is La La Land. Written and directed by Damian Chazelle, and starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, La La Land follows a struggling actress and an equally struggling jazz musician as they try to make it in Los Angeles and Hollywood.

We finished with the Classic drama-horror, The Exorcist. This 1973 film was written by William Peter Blatty, directed by William Friedkin and stars Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow. The film tells the story of a girl that is seemingly possessed by an evil spirit and, having been taken to numerous doctors and psychiatrists by her mother, a priest gets involved and decides that an exorcism is in order.

First up, Rogue One. What do you do if you are Disney? You spend $4billion on Lucasfilm and you want to start to recoup the money you have spent. Luckily, this investment includes arguably the preeminent science fiction franchise ever, so you expand the story, backfill some bits, and you have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna and Donnie Yen amongst others.

ACT#005 – Amy Adams

Hello and welcome to our latest actor special, this time taking a look at the work of Amy Adams.

Born 20th August 1974 in Italy to an American service family, Amy has 55 acting credits to her name. These productions, in turn, have provided her with much critical acclaim and she has, so far, amassed 136 Award Nominations, winning 43, including:

• Five Academy Award Nominations (4 Best Supporting Actress and 1 Best Actress)
• Five BAFTA Award Nominations (3 Best Actress in a Supporting Role and 2 Best Actress in a Leading Role)
• Six Golden Globe Awards (3 Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and 3 Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy – with two wins in the latter category for American Hustle in 2014 and Big Eyes in 2015)

With two films out in recent weeks, namely Nocturnal Animals and Arrival, that have garnered much critical praise, more award nominations and wins can only be around the corner.

BTTF#025 – Arrival, Crimson Tide

Hello and welcome to the 25th episode of the main podcast. In this episode we take a look at the cinema release of Arrival, starring Amy Adams, and the classic film is Crimson Tide.

In Arrival, 12 alien space ships arrive and float mysteriously above the ground at various locations around the world. The US uses the services of a linguistics professor to try and translate what the aliens are saying/writing before other countries go on the offensive). The film was directed by Denis Villeneuve, the screenplay was by Eric Heisserer and is based on a short story called Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang. The film stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whittaker.

Next up is the classic film, Crimson Tide. Heightened tensions and civil unrest in Eastern Europe towards the end of the Cold War are the backdrop to this film that follows events on a nuclear submarine when a launch order is received. The film was released in May 1995 and was directed by Tony Scott. The screenplay was by Michael Shiffer and the film starred Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, Matt Craven and Ricky Schroder.

BTTF#024 – Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, The Usual Suspects

Welcome to our belated 24th episode of the main podcast. In this episode we take a look at Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and the classic film is The Usual Suspects.

The second installment of the Jack Reacher franchise has arrived in the form of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The film follows Reacher as he attempts to clear the name of an army major accused of treason and, subsequently, his own name when the baddies attempt to stitch him up on a murder charge).  The film was directed by Edward Zwick, the screenplay was by Richard Wenk and is based on the novel by Lee Child. The film stars Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Danika Yarosh, Aldis Hodge, Patrick Heusinger and Holt McCallany amongst others.

In The Usual Suspects, the sole survivor of a gun battle and explosion on a ship tells an investigator of the events that led to that point in time.  The film was directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie. The film starred Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Chazz Palminterri and Pete Postlethwaite amongst others.

Our next main podcast will be in mid-November and will take a look at Arrival, starring Amy Adams, and the classic film will be Crimson Tide starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.  An actor special will follow at the end of the November and will take a look at the work of Amy Adams.
