BTTF#028 – Life, The Godfather

Hello and welcome to the 28th episode of the podcast. In this episode we take a look at the recent release of the sci-fi film Life and the classic film is The Godfather.

First up is the science fiction film, Life. The film follows a group of astronauts on the International Space Station who retrieve a space probe carrying soil samples from Mars. Within the sample they find the first evidence of extraterrestrial life. They manage to reanimate this lifeform and the film follows the events that follow. Life is directed by Daniel Espinosa and was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film stars Jake Gyllenhall, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Ariyon Bakare, Olga Dihovichnaya and Hiroyuki Sanada.

This episode’s classic film is The Godfather, which is highly acclaimed and regarded by many as one of the best films ever. The film follows the Corleone mafia family in a cycle of crime and violence as Don Vito’s reign ends and his youngest son, Michael, takes over. The film is based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name and he wrote the screenplay along with Francis Ford Coppola, who also directed the film. The film stars Marlon Brando as the titular Godfather, Don Vito Corleone, and Al Pacino stars as his youngest son, Michael. Other stars include James Caan, Robert Duval, Richard S Castellano, Talia Shire et al. The film was released in 1972, making this its 45th anniversary year.

BTTF#016 – Spotlight, Deadpool, The Martian, The General

Welcome to the 16th episode of the main podcast. This episode looks at Spotlight, Deadpool, The Martian and The General. We had been due to look at The Boy but this is not released until March now.

Spotlight follows the investigative reporting team at the Boston Globe as they dig into the child abuse scandal at the hands of the Catholic clergy. The film is directed by Tom McCarthy and stars the likes of Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Leiv Schreiber and Stanley Tucci.

Deadpool is another Marvel superhero hitting our screens, albeit brought to life by 20th Century Fox rather than Marvel’s own studios. Ryan Reynolds plays a character who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and is approached by a shady character from a secret organisation with the offer of a cure with the side-benefit of superhero powers. Needless to say it doesn’t go smoothly and Reynolds’ character becomes the titular Deadpool and the film follows his search for the person that carried out the procedures with the hope of correcting some of the side-effects.

Ridley Scott’s The Martian is the home release for this episode and stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels and Sean Bean amongst others. The film follows Damon’s character who is left for dead on Mars by his crewmates and is a story of his quest for survival and NASA’s search for a rescue plan back home.

The 1998 movie The General is the classic movie for this episode. The film stars Brendan Gleeson as Martin Cahill, a violent criminal from Dublin and follows his early life through to his eventual murder.

The next episode looks at The Boy (finally!), Black Mass and The Italian Job (the original version). Before that, however, there will be an actor special looking at Clint Eastwood.
